Part 1: What? So What?
My first two years of college at the university opened my eyes to great opportunities, connections, and knowledge …
Being accepted into the Darwin T. Turner Scholarship Program was the first achievement that impacted my college experience. In high school, I only knew that this scholarship was going to pay for my tuition. I was honored be accepted into the scholarship program, but little did I know how big of an impact the scholarship would have on my college career and most importantly, my life.
I soon realized that the Turner Scholarship is full of family, love, and a home a way from home. I have found some of my closest friends through being a Turner Scholar. I look towards the directors of the program as my life coaches. They help me with academics, leadership, and even personal issues. Being a Turner Scholar is more than just a certification. Being a Turner Scholar means that everyday I strive to uphold the values of the scholarship because I am always representing what Darwin T. Turner was. Through this scholarship, I have learned that hard work pays off. I have also learned that the only person who defines you is yourself, so follow your dreams and fill yourself with happiness. I know that I am not alone because I am a Turner Scholar. I feel myself to be both humbled and honored to be able to “throw up my “T””, because I am a Turner Scholar.
Another experience that both greatly and positively impacted my life was joining Student Government. I started out interning with a man who I am proud to have known and be mentored by. He was the Chief of Staff, majoring in Biology Pre-Medicine, and was heavily involved on campus. He was what I wanted to push myself to become. He helped me develop into a Student Government leader by bringing me to meetings, introducing me to people, and getting me involved. In the spring of my freshman year, I decided to run for At-Large Senator, a position that is elected by the student body.
Campaigning to the whole undergraduate student body is vital in order to win this position. I suffered hardships as well as successes through the campaign process. I not only had struggled through the hardest times with planning meetings, having 20-hour days, and talking to everyone that came in my path, but I was pushed to my limit. I quickly had to learn how to prioritize and manage my time wisely. My hard work surely paid off, and now I am proud for not giving up and putting my heart into a project.
Being in Student Government has also given me great pride in my university. I sit on an administrative committee for the Undergraduate Academic Affairs. Sitting on a committee with so many distinguished individuals is very educational. I learn both professionalism and presentation through watching how these highly esteemed individuals conduct and participate in meetings. It is also motivational to sit on the committee. When I can physically see the passion that these individuals have for the university, I gain motivation to serve for the students as well. Their pride for UC builds my pride of being a bearcat.
Lastly, an experience that greatly influenced my life so far is joining the Honors Program in the spring of 2013. Before joining the program, I found myself dreading the academic aspect of college. I did not find the courses or content challenging or interesting. I was tired of the coursework that seemed to provide me little benefit. Joining this program has brought back memories of a class that I was accepted into in Elementary School, called “Quest”. Quest was an additional class that was offered to students that tested to be accelerated in the classroom. In Quest, students would be able to show creativity, read on higher levels, and perform above the rest of the class in activities and projects. I have found this vital aspect in the courses that the Honors class provides. I foresee other Honors courses to bring me great joy because I am learning more about my experiences, my future, and most importantly myself.
I have been blessed in this life with many gifts and talents. I am a person who is strongly passionate about my community. I show my gratitude to those around me by using my gifts and talents for the betterment of others. In my community, I compete in a pageant that represents the community. With holding titles, I strive to become a role model to the younger citizens of Marion. I want to not be a model to others, but to give others motivation to be a better version of themselves. I worked hard to grow confidence in myself. The most beautiful aspect of a person is inner beauty and acceptance of oneself, and I want to be able to give that to others.
I also want to study hard in school so that I can provide for my community through service of being a nurse. I am able to kill two birds with one stone because I love the health care field and nursing allows me to engage in my community in a way that makes my academics pay off and feel worthy.
I also want to provide for my community through my participation in organizations. My participation in UC student organizations has helped me evolve into a great leader. I am able to learn skills because I am actively working in groups and executive boards. I am constantly learning about different organizational techniques and people skills. Student Government has allowed me to work on initiatives to better the campus for the students. I want to further my involvement, as I grow older by becoming a critical member of any society that I live in. I am blessed to have great gifts around me. I want to pay my contribution forward.
Part 2: Now What?
As I enter into my third year at UC, I want to start my junior year off with a timeline of goals for the upcoming year. I have found myself to come up with items that I would like to get done or projects that I would like to do, but I find myself falling behind or forgetting about specific ideas. Writing down a timeline for the goals and dates that I would like to get them done will allow my goals to become more realistic and concrete. I will not be scatter-brained with twenty initiatives on my plate, but be able to know how long I have to get a task done before I should start wrapping up and moving to my next initiative. I also want to come up with objectives and specific stepping-stones that will allow me to evaluate my purpose, my passion, and my accomplishments. I am a woman with great passion, but I have found my focus to go awry when I do not have a set agenda. Going into next year, I find the most beneficial advice that I could give myself is to create to my own timeline and goal sheet, so that I can feel accomplishment when I cross off goals. I can alternately find my weaknesses and seek improvement when I am not able to cross off goals.
Before next year, I also want to learn more about the opportunities that UC has to offer to its students. Opportunities such as Honors seminars and experiences, study abroad options, co-op opportunities, and research are just a few of the opportunities that UC students have. We are at an extreme advantage being at this university. We are at a university that is known and highly favored for its co-op and research opportunities. We also have many great courses coming through the Honors Program and other programs as well. I want to take full advantage of being a student to this university. This summer, I want to conduct research about different UC student experience opportunities to hopefully broaden and strengthen my UC experience to make it my own.
